Creative Breadcrumbs #3
Part 3, Failure is one step closer to success
In this series I am describing my own journey in creativity, work and life, showcasing my creative work made through the last 15 years in my own spare time. Everything you see is hand drawn, with pens and markers, on paper.
Quitting my career as a graphic designer felt like a failure at first. I had some low points where I was wandering Rotterdam trying to figure what to do with myself. Having spent the last six years working with graphic design, it was hard to imagine doing something else.
Restoring furniture had been a hobby of mine, besides drawing, since moving to Rotterdam. You can find the most amazing furniture outside that is thrown away. I took chairs with me home and spend ridiculous amounts of hours refurbishing them to the best of my abilities. One day I came across a man standing in his garage working on an old door blade. He told me he knew a guy who probably needed help. Without any other experience than my hobby, I decided to seek this guy up and try to find some work making or restoring furniture.
And sure enough, the guy needed help. I got hired as a trainee in a furniture making company without any schooling or work experience in that trade. The pay was low, and the working days (and nights) were long. Still, it was a door opener for me.

Working as a furniture trainee, I still spent most evenings working on my own art. Which gradually got better, at least it was developing into something. Still lacking an original style, and definition, to be anything presentable.
This is a weekly publication released to document my work, and for your enjoyment. If you want to see more, please subscribe to Black Bread (the name of my new comic).

I REALLY like your stuff, and your Sunday comics are awesome!
